Japan has one of the oldest and largest film industries in the world – as of 2010 the fourth largest by number of feature films produced. In 2011 Japan produced 411 feature films that earned 54.9% of a box office total of US$2.338 billion. Movies have been produced in Japan since 1897, when the first foreign cameramen arrived. In a ranking of the best films produced in Asia by Sight & Sound, Japan made up eight of the top twelve, with Tokyo Story ranked number one. Japan has won the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film four times, again more than any other country in Asia. The word shomin-geki (ćș¶æ°‘抇, "ordinary people drama[s]") refers to a genre in Japanese cinema that depicts small contemporary plots about the common people. Shomin-geki is a term created by the Academia: in Japan, these movies were called shƍshimin eiga (ć°ćž‚æ°‘ 映画), meaning "films abouts the petite bourgeoisie"; or homu dorama (ホム ăƒ‰ăƒ©ăƒž), from English "home drama". Both were comic geniuses of the silent era, but Chaplin's humour is rooted in a vaudeville sentimentality (Keaton employs a more modern cynicism) that makes him the perfect introduction to silent movies. The first feature film originally presented as a talkie was The Jazz Singer, which premiered on October 6, 1927 In 1927, Warner Brothers released the first sound film, The Jazz Singer and less than 10 years later, Charles Chaplin’s Modern Times would unofficially put an end to the era. During the 1920s and 1930s, Japan was one of the world's two largest producers of motion pictures, along with the United States. Though the country's film industry was among the first to produce both sound and talking features, the full changeover to sound proceeded much more slowly than in the West. The enduring popularity of the silent medium in Japanese cinema owed in great part to the tradition of the benshi, a live narrator who performed as accompaniment to a film screening. The United States produced the world's first sync-sound musical film, The Jazz Singer, in 1927,[8] and was at the forefront of sound-film development in the following decades. 🐉 KAIJU - BIG MONSTER MOVIES --------------------------------------------------- Eight Legged Freaks (2002) The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953, USA) - pre-godzilla; includence It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955, USA) Varan the Unbelievable (1958, Japan) The Winged Serpent (1982, USA) Pulgasari (1985, North Korea) Shin Godzilla (2016, Japan) Colossal (2017, Canada) đŸ‡°đŸ‡· FILMS - KOREAN CINEMA ------------------------------- - [ ] The Handmaiden (2016) - [ ] Aimless Bullet (1961) - [ ] Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring (2003) - [ ] The Housemaid (1960) - [ ] Memories of Murder (2003) - [ ] Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) - [ ] The Quiet Family (1998) - [ ] Peppermint Candy (1999) - [ ] Thirst (2009) - [ ] Chilsu and Mansu (1988) - [ ] Beasts of Prey (1985) - [ ] The March of Fools (1975) - [ ] Sweet Dream (1936) - oldest surviing film - [ ] Mulberry (1986) - [ ] Fire Woman (1971) - housemaid remake - [ ] Pulgasari (1985) - north korean monster movie - [ ] Jazzy Misfits (2019) - [ ] Samjin Company English Class - [ ] Sunshine Family - [ ] Mother (2009) - [ ] The Good, the bad, and the Weird (2008) - [ ] A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) - [ ] The Day A Pig Fell Into A Well (1996) - [ ] New World (2013) - [ ] The Chase (2017) - [ ] Castaway On The Moon (2009) - [ ] House Of Hummingbird (2018) đŸ‡«đŸ‡·đŸ€ź NEW FRENCH EXTREMITY -------------------------------------------------- - [ ] Martyrs (2008) - [ ] High Tension (2003) - [x] Inside (2007) - [x] Climax (2018) - [ ] Raw (2016) - [ ] Them (2006) - [ ] Frontier(s) (2007) - [ ] Trouble Every Day (2001) - [ ] CachĂ© (2005) - [ ] Enter the Void (2009) - [ ] Revenge (2017) - [ ] Sheitan (2006) - [ ] Irreversible (2002) - [ ] I Stand Alone (1998) - [ ] Intimacy (2001) - [ ] Romance (1999) - [ ] L'humanitĂ© (1999) - [ ] In My Skin (2002) - [ ] Irreversible (2002) - [ ] Sitcom (1998) - [ ] Calvaire (2004) - [ ] Demonlover (2002) - [ ] The Pornographer (2001) - [ ] The Ordeal (2004) - [ ] Man Bites Dog (1992) - [ ] Les amants criminels (1999) - [ ] Fat Girl (2001) - [ ] The Horde (2009) Nasty sub-genre of horror (or torture porn with a French accent Coined by critic James Quandt as a rather pejorative term to recall a series of French transgressive films developed under the turn of the 21st century * excessive brutality and sexuality; * everyday life’s violence depictions; * implications or lack of behind sex; * social decadence; * psychotic struggle of inner urges; * construction (or destruction) of identities 🇼đŸ‡č 🟹 GIALLO ---------------------- - [ ] Blood and Black Lace (1964) - [x] The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) - [ ] Death Laid an Egg (1968) - [ ] The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963) - [x] Deep Red (1975) - [x] Tenebre (1982) - [ ] The Laughing Woman (1969) - [ ] No Thanks, Coffee Makes Me Nervous (1982) - [ ] The Cat o’ Nine Tails (1971) - [ ] All the Colors of the Dark (1972) - [ ] A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971) - [ ] Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972) - [x] What Have You Done to Solange? Robinson got their start in the era. Other stars who excelled during this period, however, like Ruth Chatterton (who decamped to England) and Warren William (the so-called "king of Pre-Code", who died in 1948), would wind up essentially forgotten by the general public within a generation Hayes Code - Motion Picture Production Code 1934 to 1954 Although the Code was adopted in 1930, oversight was poor and it did not become rigorously enforced until July 1, 1934. Code began to weaken in the late 1940s 1951, the MPAA revised the code to make it more rigid; the 1951 revisions spelled out more words and subjects that were prohibited By the late 1960s, enforcement had become impossible and the Production Code was abandoned entirely. The MPAA began working on a rating system, under which film restrictions would lessen. 1968 Hayes code dropped https://www.imdb.com/list/ls008945668/?sort=user_rating,desc&st_dt=&mode=detail&page=1 Most commonly cited films for the crackdown: Baby Face Convention City (lost) I’m No Angel Red Headed Woman She Done Him Wrong The Sign of the Cross The Story of Temple Drake Baby Face and Red Headed Woman were both charged with sex and featured their female protagonists, after sleeping their way to the top, getting away with riches and rewards for their ambition. Convention City, now a lost film, featured Warners’ biggest stars at a debauched weekend; it’s most famous gags involved drunk businessmen trying to wrangle a goat up to their hotel rooms. I’m No Angel and She Done Him Wrong were a pair of Mae West movies that won major box office and even accolades– She Done Him Wrong was nominated for Best Picture. But West’s brazen sexual come ons and curvy appeal was viewed as morally unscrupulous. The Sign of the Cross and Story of Temple Drake were both dark dramas about sexual desire and moral decay. I Was a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (LeRoy, 1932) - the film was a commercial, critical, and political success. Audiences responded with outrage at the continued use of chain gangs, and their public outcry directly contributed to its eventual end. https://rarefilm.net/ Jean Harlow (cocktail) https://www.thespruceeats.com/jean-harlow-cocktail-recipe-759712 Call Her Savage is a 1932 pre-Code drama film directed by John Francis Dillon and starring Clara Bow.[1] The film was Bow's second-to-last film role. It is also one of the first portrayals of homosexuals on screen, including a scene in a gay bar.[2][3] đŸŽ¶ FILMS - MUSICALS -------------------------------- - [x] Saturday Church (2018) - [x] An American in Paris (1951) - [x] The Music Man (1962) - [x] Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) - [x] Damn Yankees (1958) - [x] No Business Like Show Business (1954) - [x] West Side Story (1961) - [x] Hamilton (2020) - [x] The King and I (1956) - [x] Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) - [x] South Pacific (1958) - [x] Oklahoma! By the end of the 1950s, costly productions and waning audiences forced studios to pass on any musical pitch that wasn’t a guaranteed box-office hit, and the genre began to dwindle Ghost singing Marni Nixon- ghost singer for featured actresses in movie musicals. Strictly speaking, film noir is not a genre, but rather the mood, style, point-of-view, or tone of a film. Noir might be a mood, but that’s a bit amorphous, like Justice Potter Stewart’s definition of hard-core pornography: “I know it when I see it.” Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. The 1940s and 1950s are generally regarded as the "classic period" of American film noir. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key, black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. bright lights and deep black shadows Film noir translates from French as “black film,” but that’s misleading because these aren't French films. The term was, however, coined by French critics. It’s actually German cinematographers and directors like John F. Seitz and Fritz Lang that deserve the most credit for shaping the style. They applied the fundamentals of expressionism to the gritty American crime story, inverting the internal turmoil and anguish of private eyes and volatile gangsters so they’re visible on the surface. A majority of film noirs were set in Los Angeles due to the film industry’s presence but also to sell the City of Angels short of being angelic Film noir is often identified with a visual style; melodramas "The 'most American film' genre, because no society could have created a world so filled with doom, fate, fear and betrayal, unless it were essentially naive and optimistic. Paracinema is an academic term to refer to a wide variety of film genres out of the mainstream, bearing the same relationship to 'legitimate' film as paraliterature like comic books and pulp fiction bears to literature. "paracinema" is also used in the context of avant-garde or experimental film studies to denote works identified by their makers as films but that lack one or more material/mechanical elements of the film medium. It has been suggested that if Carnival of Souls had been made in Europe, it would be considered an art film, while if Eyes Without a Face had been made in the U.S., it would have been categorized as a low-budget horror film. Blaxploitation or blacksploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. Canuxploitation - The phenomenon emerged in 1974, when the government of Canada introduced new regulations to jumpstart the then-underdeveloped Canadian film industry, increasing the Capital Cost Allowance tax credit from 60 per cent to 100 per cent. The period ended in 1982, when the Capital Cost Allowance was reduced to 50 per cent, although films that had entered production under the program continued to be released for another few years afterward. The Oscar voting process is managed by an accounting team at PricewaterhouseCoopers, who have handled the duties of mailing out ballots and tabulating the results for more than 80 years. The firm mails the ballots of eligible nominees to members of the Academy in December to reflect the previous eligible year with a due date sometime in January of the next year, then tabulates the votes in a process that takes some 1700 hours. However, of the hundreds of films released per year, less than one dozen films will eventually be nominated for Best Picture. Official Criteria * Must have a running length of more than 40 minutes * Have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format * Must open in a commercial theater, for paid admission, in Los Angeles County between January 1 and midnight December 31, and run for seven consecutive days, at least three screenings daily (one of which needs to be between 6 PM and 10 PM) * Be sufficiently advertised in Los Angeles media no documentary has ever been nominated for Best Picture, and it's safe to assume that since there is a Best Documentary Academy Award that only narrative films will ever be nominated for Best Picture. rare for animated films, foreign films, sequels, and remakes to be nominated From 1944 to 2009, five films were nominated for Best Picture per year. In 2009, the Academy announced that the nominees would be increased to ten (prior to 1944, the number of nominees fluctuated from three to twelve). All of the roughly 5800 members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences can vote to nominate movies for Best Picture once Oscar nomination balloting begins. When Oscar balloting opens, every member of the Academy (nearly 8,000 people) can submit their choices for Best Picture. Voters are asked to name their top five selections in order of preference, with their favorite going in the #1 spot. After balloting closes and the preliminary results are tabulated, a movie needs to secure 5 percent of first place votes in order to earn a Best Picture nomination. The Academy also uses a single-transferrable system during the process, eliminating movies that did not receive enough votes to move on and transferring those ballots to films still in the running. This goes on for as many rounds necessary until the field is set. The movie starred Louise Willy, who starred in eight burlesque comedies from 1896 to 1913. In "Coucher de la MariĂ©e," which was initially screened in 1896 and released three years later, Willy performs a striptease and bathes. "L'Ecu d'Or ou la Bonne Auberge" (1908) "L'Ecu d'Or ou la Bonne Auberge," the earliest surviving hardcore pornographic film, was first distributed in 1908.
